Every year around this time I get super excited for what’s to come- a crazy, busy, amazing, creative and wonderful time following couples around on the happiest day of their lives. To get myself inspired I always like to reflect on last year’s weddings- here are my favorite photos from wedding season 2012.

Acadia Chorus

As you’ll see in other posts, I’ve spent a good chunk of time this Spring shooting at the Acadia School of Music. Every time I visit, I’m reminded of what an incredible and special place it is, not only for musicians but for those of us who are lucky enough to hear them rehearse, teach, or perform. Here is the finishing shot from the Acadia Chorus concert this spring.

Family ties

Met up with the H family for a shoot at the park at Scotian Gold. Despite living here for my entire life, I’d never actually shot there. It proved to be a perfect little spot for running around with kids- and there were a bunch of them in this group! Turns out the H family and I have lots of connections. They were lovely and I hope to see them again!

A good friend of mine and his lovely wife (a new friend of mine) invited me to the Irving Centre to have some fun with their one year old baby girl. And some balloons. She was absolutely perfect and it was one of the most fun photoshoots I’ve ever had.

Haunted by the emptiness

I’ve developed an obsession lately with the old derelict KCA building. My dad was a teacher there in the 80s, and I have a lot of memories of visiting a vibrant, busy building filled with noise and learning and energy. At one time, it must have been a very grand old place- the centre of the community, celebrated for it’s vision, and you can feel the sense of power from its spot on the hill. Now, it sits abandoned- lonely, with memories of moments learned and hearts broken floating in between empty walls. I’ve become fixated on abandoned schools as a photo project. Here is the old ‘Kentville Schools’ as we used to call it, waiting for someone to come and restore her to her former glory of use.

Erin Costelo is an unmistakable talent, and one of the hottest things in jazz / blues / soul singing. I met Erin during a photoshoot for Occasions Magazine and not only is she talented, she’s humble and kind. We had a blast getting creative together at the Chickenburger and True North Diner. This year, for some reason, I had a lot of people asking if I had any photos of Acadia. I have lots of photos taken AT Acadia- in Denton Hall, at the Irving Centre, etc- but I made it my mission this year to collect at least one good one of the campus. This was a perfect winter snowy day, looking at the back of U-Hall- the less seen side.

I’m helping the Acadia School of Music update the photos on their website. Which means I’ve spent the last few weeks running around to all kinds of amazing concerts, recitals, classes, etc. It’s a pretty special place and the energy there is amazing. Here’s one of my favorite shots- of Miss Deirdre Kellerman, performing the role of Rosaline in Die Fledermaus.

Tors Cove, Newfoundland

I try to get to Newfoundland as often as possible- after all, three of my best friends live there, and it’s a landscape paradise. This is on a beautiful perfect July afternoon at Tors Cove, which is a good drive outside St. Johns.

I was so busy enjoying Hong Kong when I traveled there last year that I didn’t take too many photos! Just spent some time this afternoon looking back through them to see if there was anything worthwhile- and this one came to my attention. Hong Kong Central to your right, with the Harbour to the left leading to Kowloon.

I have some cousins who live fairly close to me, about 20 minutes away, that I never see. Life gets busy, and you know they’re out there, living an equally busy life. Images of Gratitude: October winner: Shannon Eastman and her husband Mark. Offering foster homes to German Shepherd rescue dogs, Shannon and Mark are very active with the East Coast German Shepherd Rescue, as well as the Kings County SPCA. I loved seeing them in action with all their dogs- thank you, Shannon and Mark, for everything you do in our community for animals.

Fundraiser for Prostate Cancer Canada!

This past month, 48 amazing women from the Annapolis Valley got behind my crazy thought of doing a portrait collection of women wearing moustaches and men’s clothes in support of Prostate Cancer Canada. Deep Roots 2012

I was one of the photographers for the 2012 Deep Roots Festival, an event I’d heard about for years but had never attended. Well, I won’t be missing it in the future, I can tell you that! I was delighted to photograph the opening night show at the Whittle, with stories about the Dominion Atlantic Railway told by Gary Ness and music by the Mud Creek Boys. An awesome experience!

Gaspereau Valley mist

Those who know me well, know that I can’t resist a good landscape shot. Landscapes are undoubtedly my best work, and also my favorite thing to shoot. There’s nothing like being completely connected to your environment with no one else’s wishes but yours.

This shot of Gaspereau Valley was taken one morning when I was dropping my dog off at daycare- and I spotted the mist rising off the valley river. I just happened to have my camera with me and asked if I could borrow my friend’s deck- and voila, one of my favorite new shots was born.

Super quick and fun holiday pics- in the Valley and in the City!

When I was living in Halifax, I developed a great little partnership with the amazing Fiddleheads Kids Shop in Dartmouth. We worked on all kinds of fun projects together and one of them was a full-day of Holiday photos at their store. It was so popular that we are doing it again this year!

I’m also doing a similar day of mini-shoots in Kentville, with Baby Central Consignment. I’m super pumped to be lining up with two such unique and fabulous local businesses.

Sessions are 20 minutes each- we get ‘em in fast, dress ‘em in some fun holiday props, and get some smiles! All files are edited on a high res DVD and the fee is $85. If you’d like to book, drop me a line.

We’re all grown up now

The lovely Farrell was one of my math tutors in high school. (As you can tell I’m better at the artsy stuff!) She was always sweet and patient, and I was thrilled when she contacted me to spend a morning at the research station with her growing brood. Her two little girls were so much fun to chase, play with and they didn’t stop giggling the whole time! And it was also the anniversary of she and her sweet hubby. It’s connections like this that make my job so rewarding!
